In Kansas nearly 75% of streams are unsuitable for human use. These unique and fragile ecosystems continue to lose their diversity at an alarming rate. But many Kansas streams can be restored and a few are still nearly as pure and wild as they were before European settlement. The Healthy Streams for Kansas Initiative focuses on streams that fit one of these categories: those that reasonably can be recovered and those that need only protection from pollution or development. The Fellow will help advance the mission of the Healthy Streams Initiative.

The Healthy Streams Fellow will do stream-related research, review scientific literature, map data, assist with fieldwork, attend meetings with partners, and other work to advance the Healthy Streams Initiative.  
 
The Fellow will work 35 hours per week for up to 10 weeks from June through August and will be paid $12.80 per hour. The Fellow will work out of the Kansas office in Topeka, but may travel around the state to visit project sites. Some overnight travel may be required.The selected Fellow will be eligible to apply for the Lance Hedges Conservation Award. 

 

The Healthy Streams Fellow will do stream-related research, review scientific literature, map data, assist with fieldwork, attend meetings with partners, and other work to advance the Healthy Streams Initiative. 

 

• Applicants must be at least 18 years of age during the time of the fellowship. 
• Applicant must be either an undergraduate student from a four-year Kansas college or university; or a graduate student in a degree-granting program at a Kansas college or university. Students who graduate in the spring are eligible to apply. 
• Currently studying towards a degree in natural resource management, wildlife biology, environmental science, water resources, or related field.  
• Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver’s license).
• Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment.  

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 
• Experience with mapping programs (for example, ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine, or QGIS). 
• Research interests in fields complementary to the Healthy Streams Initiative mission (for example, aquatic biology, fluvial geomorphology, physical geography, water quality studies, etc).
• Experience recognizing plant and animal species.  
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.

This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with the Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program.
