Other Conditions: Salary funds provided for nine-month equivalent (0.82 FTE). The selectee is expected to support the remainder of their salary from extramural grants and contracts. Anticipated start date is after July 1, 2020, subject to position clearance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Water Resources Research Center, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, seeks applicants for an Assistant Researcher position. We invite candidates who can conduct research addressing Hawai’i’s most important water-related problems stemming from climate change, invasive species, shifting water needs, and increasing human population, using field methods, data analysis, and computer modeling techniques.
  2. Incorporate both western and traditional scientific knowledge systems to facilitate the preservation and protection of freshwater resources in support of the livelihoods and traditional practices of Native Hawaiians.
  3. Obtain substantial extramural funding to support a vigorous research program.
  4. Regularly publish findings in appropriate peer-reviewed journals.
  5. Teach at least one course per year in collaborative teaching ventures between UHM colleges.
  6. Advise graduate students.
  7. Provide experiential learning/research opportunities for undergraduate students.
  8. Play a full and positive role in contributing, as a WRRC faculty member, to Center governance

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Earned doctorate in a relevant discipline such as Geography, Atmospheric Sciences, Earth Sciences, or Natural Resources.
  2. Expertise in topics related to the role of plants in the hydrological cycle.
  3. Publication record in the relevant discipline.
  4. Experience and interest in community outreach.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Familiarity with traditional knowledge systems.
  2. Knowledge of Hawai’i ecosystems, climate, and culture.
  3. Experience conducting field-based research in ecohydrology.
  4. Experience in environmental modeling.
