WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Freshwater Conservation Specialist (FCS) provides technical leadership and support to the Ecuador’s business unit and plans and directs preserve management programs and stewardship.  The FCS addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species, fosters cross-site learning among conservation community, and supplies conservation planning teams with site or landscape level information relevant to the planning process.  The Freshwater Conservation Specialist develops and implements conservation strategies principally in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region, in the context of community-based conservation projects and employs a full range of protection tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in land and implements a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities.  The Freshwater Conservation Specialist coordinates community support, ensures the maintenance of preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, coordinates multiple projects, sets deadlines, and manages completion. The FCS supervises and ensures the appropriate implementation of conservation, restoration, and sustainable production activities implemented in the field by project partners and contractors. The FCS would facilitate scientific information generation and knowledge management regarding freshwater biodiversity and watershed management in the Amazon region.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU

We are looking for a professional who:

•    Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
•    Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
•    Coordinates project activities, including managing budgets.
•    Coordinates with public officials and community groups in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region.
•    Develops and contributes to the implementation of freshwater community- led conservation activities, with emphasis in the fluvial reserve conservation mechanism.
•    Monitors the processes associated with the fluvial reserve conservation mechanism.
•    Identifies and strengthens community livelihood strategies. 
•    Plans and monitors conservation actions focused on freshwater resources.
•    Strengthens the science component for collecting information on aquatic biodiversity, participatory monitoring, among others.
•    Performs a critical revision of products, and develops activities, work plans and management plans. 
•    Develops terms of reference for new contracts.
•    Brings accompany and technical assistance in the implementation of activities in the field.
•    Coordinates scientific information generation and management about freshwater and terrestrial biodiversity.
•    Promotes alliances with local governments and non-government organizations to advance projects objectives and leverage efforts. 
•    Supports the development of proposals to extend conservation strategies in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region.
•    Works with civil society and indigenous organizations to strengthen their institutional capacity and sustainability. 
•    Contributes to and systematizes information for project indicators that involves inputting necessary information to comply with project standards. 
•    Organize discussion forums and workshops with various stakeholders regarding conservation, indigenous territorial management and development projects. 
•    Works in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU

•    Bachelor’s degree and 4 years’ experience in natural resource management, conservation of biodiversity or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, including government officials, indigenous organizations, non-governmental organizations, internal scientists. 
•    Work experience with indigenous organizations and local communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region. 
•    Experience in projects formulation, management, monitoring and evaluation.
•    Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
•    Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, ArcGis, web browsers, etc.
•    Experience in training processes. 
•    Residing in the Amazon Region.                   
•    Willingness to travel frequently.

Desired Qualifications:
•    Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English. Other languages will be considered a plus.
•    Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
•    Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
•    Knowledge of politics, government policies and agencies, and non-government organizations, focused in Ecuador, with respect to environmental affairs, indigenous interests and social development programs. 
•    Knowledge of and employment of legal mechanisms that involve indigenous rights, biodiversity conservation, and management of protected areas, focused in Ecuador. 
•    Knowledge of ecological land and freshwater management principles and mechanisms.
•    Experience in management and planning of protected areas. 
•    Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
