SEI York is looking for a communications specialist to help amplify the impact of SEI’s research and contribute to the wider communications strategy.

Role

Joining a highly-motivated team, you will promote and develop the impact of SEI York’s research to a broad range of stakeholders (academia, policy makers, the public and the media), across different platforms and output types (social media, website, reports, infographics and other digital media) and using a range of approaches (events, webinars, and marketing resources). You will also contribute to the implementation of the wider SEI communications strategy, working with colleagues across the world, and with communications teams within the University of York. You will also provide support to our research staff, from communications strategy planning at the research project proposal development stage through to implementation.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • You are expected to have a degree or equivalent professional qualification and experience – ideally in journalism and/or communications – and have experience working with scientists or writing scientific news content, particularly in the field of sustainability and the environment.
  • You will need to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communications skills, and have an aptitude for communicating complex scientific concepts to a range of target audiences.
  • You will have experience writing copy in various formats, including website content, blog posts, press releases, policy and discussion briefs, and marketing materials. Experience with creative and non-written media would also be an advantage, as would the ability to provide editorial advice for specialised content such as academic articles or reports for decision makers.
  • You will need extensive knowledge of digital communications tools and practices, a solid understanding and experience of creating content in innovative ways for digital communications channels, and experience of supporting events organisation and delivery.
  • You will ideally have an established reputation within the media and a desire to enhance your networks to cover new areas of research.
