Quality regional publications and assessment reports produced, including the Global Environment Outlook (GEO 7) flagship report for North America; quarterly regional inputs into the Environmental Science-Policy Tracker air quality data reporting facilitated; inputs into the annual SDGs Measuring Progress report facilitated; thought leadership provided to the foresight and futures thinking process.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and the Regional Subprogramme Coordinator – chemicals and Pollution Action, the contractor will coordinate the production of a series of regional publications and assessment reports in line with the UNEA resolution 5/3 on the Future of GEO, and the following POW outputs under Chemical and Pollution Action.

  1. Support the production of a series of regional publications including the Global Environment Outlook (GEO 7) flagship report for North America. This includes-
    o Support the authors and contributors to the reports from North America region in coordination and collaboration with HQ teams;
    o Follow-up on assignment of tasks to authors and contributors in the region;
    o Facilitate communication between NAO and HQ and Authors.
  2. Undertake research, data collection and analysis of environmental trends, patterns and key challenges to inform regional environmental assessment reports and spotlight reports.
    o Provide quality written outputs, e.g., substantive chapters or sections of the reports, analysis and inputs to publications, reports, the World Environment Situation Room, etc.
    o Support the interpretation of regional environmental issues, trends and patterns, into graphs, charts, and tables using data visualization methods to support data-driven presentation and reporting.
    o Update the North American marine protected areas storymap twice in nine months.
  3. Facilitate the regional inputs into the Environmental Science-Policy Tracker quarterly air quality data reporting, and the annual SDGs Measuring Progress report. This includes-
    o Identify and support the selection of key authors and contributors to the reports from North America region in coordination and collaboration with HQ teams
    o Oversee the production of authors TORs;
    o Assignment of tasks to contributing authors in the region;
    o Facilitate communication between NAO and HQ and Authors.
  4. Support the UNEP strategic foresight and futures thinking process:
    o Participate in monthly meetings and report to the Regional Director;
    o Support the identification and selection of experts and partners from the region;
    o Support the convening of regional foresight workshop and report production to capture emerging signals of change (about 25 to 30 experts between October and November 2023).

Qualifications/special skills
• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences or a related field is required.

• A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Other skills and competencies:

• Knowledge of available resources.
• Ability to analyze environmental data from various sources.
• Ability to follow directions and use personal judgement in delivery of relevant products by deadlines agreed upon; The candidate
should have the ability to deliver outputs and work under pressure.
• Proven interpersonal and communication skills. Exposure to cross cultural and multi-ethnic working environment.
• Knowledge of the UN system and culture and familiarity with the UN interagency networks is desired but not essential.
• A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in environmental assessment; and familiarity with the related approaches and methodologies.
• Experience in scientific and policy assessments, computer science, data science, data analytics, statistics, data visualization applications, information management, or related area is desirable.
• Previous working experience with recent Global Environment Outlooks (GEO) is an asset.
• Knowledge of the North American context is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy position fluency in English is required.
