We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the School of Engineering’s Pitch-In project titled ‘A Self-Sustaining and Non-Intrusive Wireless Smart Water Meter’.
Pitch-In (Promoting the Internet of Things (IoT) via Collaboration between HEIs and Industry) will extract benefit for the UK from Internet of Things technologies and expertise via wide-ranging collaboration between academic institutions and the public and private sectors. Pitch-In will offer the opportunity to develop concepts and technology enabled through IoT, resulting in potentially large societal impact.
You will complete time limited tasks under the direction of the Principal Investigator. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team and our industry partner, Northumbrian Water Group (NWG). You will engage in several knowledge exchange activities to accelerate nationally research impact. You should be able to communicate and network with local and international stakeholders. At the request of the PI you should be willing to travel and present research findings. You should have excellent interpersonal skills with an aptitude for engaging with stakeholders and you should have the ability to use initiative and creativity to solve problems.
The University holds a silver Athena SWAN award in recognition of our good employment practices for the advancement of gender equality. The University also holds the HR Excellence in Research award for our work to support the career development of our researchers, and is a member of the Euraxess initiative supporting researchers in Europe

You will be based within the School of Engineering, Newcastle University.
Within the remit of this project, we aim to design a self-sustaining and non-intrusive wireless smart water meter for detecting and reducing leakage through flow and pressure monitoring. This meter should rely on energy harvesting and sensing unit and have a dedicated energy management unit, computing element(s) and communication unit. The sensing unit will be based on non-intrusive sensors, and the communication unit should transmit the measured information wirelessly to a central base station by using standard IoT protocols (e.g. LoRa). You will be tasked with working on both aspects, the hardware and software design of this smart water meter.
