POSITION SUMMARY

The Data Science Technician Intern will work under the overall guidance of the Institute’s Research Scientist supporting the Precision Aquaculture group with sensor integration, data acquisition, and analytics. This is a part-time position; the incumbent may work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week.  The internship is available from approximately July through December, 2023.

RESPONSIBLITIES & SCOPE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Help with sensor integration and data acquisition in Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) conditions.
  • Perform object annotation, i.e., image labeling, of underwater image data.
  • Assist in programming for the development of machine learning models.
  • Model result compilation in Microsoft Excel or similar software.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently pursuing a diploma or bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline.
  • Proficient in intermediate-level Python programming. 
  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting, such as that found in college-level science courses.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of laboratory quality and safety standards.
  • Sensitivity to animal welfare issues.

 PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Basic knowledge of commonly used programming languages. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel computer applications.
  • Familiar with Machine Learning and Computer Vision applications.

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The Data Science Technician position requires standing for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • 30% of work is performed around water or in wet conditions.
  • Estimated travel – 0%.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $17 – $20/hour.
