BACKGROUND:

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit, research-for-development organization that works with governments, civil society and the private sector to solve water problems in developing countries and scale up solutions. Through partnership, IWMI combines research on the sustainable use of water and land resources, knowledge services and products with capacity strengthening, dialogue and policy analysis to support implementation of water management solutions for agriculture, ecosystems, climate change and inclusive economic growth. THE PERSON AND THE JOB:

The Research Officer – Economics will support ongoing projects dealing with water and agricultural productivity, policy influencing and advocacy, climate change adaptation in agriculture, impact assessment, and public-private partnerships (PPPs), with the aim of achieving agriculture-related economic growth and investments as well as poverty alleviation in South Asia, especially India.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement a vast range of projects including those pertaining to issues of water-energy-food, impact evaluations, index insurance, floods and droughts, and irrigation management.
  • Draft project and research reports
  • Engage with key stakeholders for project implementation, policy advocacy and dissemination of project outcomes to contribute to development goals.
  • Integrate research findings into effective policy recommendations and disseminate information through relevant guidelines and policy briefs;
  • Facilitate and support the adoption of practical, science-based, policy solutions and decisions by national and international partners, authorities, governments and donors.
  • Produce articles for peer-reviewed publication.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Masters’ in economics or statistics. Exceptional candidates who are close to finishing their masters will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated training in econometrics and statistics through coursework.
  • Strong writing skills, demonstrated through term papers and reports written during attainment of master’s degree.
  • An understanding of development challenges, especially in relation to water, poverty alleviation and food security, in India and South Asia.
  • Knowledge of regional languages.

This is a nationally recruited position based at IWMI office in New Delhi, India. The duration of the contract will be for a two-year period with the possibility of extension based on performance, availability of funds and institute requirements.
