About the opportunity:
You will be working with a motivated team of scientists tasked with developing models and statistics that inform how we use groundwater and surface water resources. This is an increasingly specialized field, and we are seeking a technical expert who specializes in one or more of the following functions:
Hydrology data scientist – the manipulation of big data sets for use in specialised modelling software. Using scripted languages (e.g. R, Python) to rescale and reformat environmental datasets as input to and output from models for water resource management. Requires the ability to work well with scientists traversing a range of disciplines, as we pursue catchment integration of physical models.
Hydrology in water policy – science informing policy to help communities resolve conflicts between instream and abstractive water use. Interpretation of complex analyses for technical and non-expert audiences, with a focus on providing strategic direction to water quantity management in Hawke’s Bay.
Hydrology and thermodynamics – the management of water resources under a changing climate poses many challenges for people and ecosystems. Specifically, modelling the thermodynamics of aquatic systems, including groundwater – surface water interactions, to inform management of water resources.
The salary range for suitable candidates that meet the requirements for this role is $95,850 – $108,630 depending on qualifications and experience.
- Recognised tertiary qualification in an environmental science or engineering discipline, with a post-graduate qualification specialising in hydrology, hydraulics, eco-hydrology, data science, or related fields.
- At least 5 years relevant experience.
- Specific knowledge of the translation of fine-scale physical processes to regional-scale water management.
- Advanced computing skills relevant to the area of specialisation.
- Excellent report writing and good presentation skills.
