WWF Romania – Freshwater Intern position

WWF has an opening through its Youth Volunteer Internship Programme for a Romanian volunteer/intern for a 5-month assignment with the WWF Romania Freshwater team based in Bucharest.

Location: WWF Romania (Bucharest)
Assignment dates: 1 December 2016 to 30 April 2017
Language required: Romanian, English
Age Category: 19-27 years

The freshwater intern will work closely with the Freshwater Coordinator, in order to achieve the organizations’ objectives in terms of protected area management and wetland restoration in Romania.

Working with business is an integral part of WWF’s strategy to deliver sustainable solutions and meet our mission of safeguarding the natural world. The freshwater programme plays a key role in this, by developing and implementing projects on water governance and wetland restoration and ensuring a proper management in protected areas.   
Key responsibilities:

  • Support the freshwater team in managing the Natura 2000 sites Blahnita and Garla Mare by analyzing the technical documentations submitted by local entrepreneurs for issuing the custodian permits;
  • Assist in identifying and provide a comprehensive research on potential areas for restoration situated on Danube floodplain and Danube Delta (abandoned fishfarms, degraded agriculture lands, etc);
  • Assist in communication with fishermen communities along the Danube and Danube Delta;
  • Organize and participate in field trips;
  • Support drafting documents: writing, translating, editing specific materials;
  • Participate in meetings with stakeholders. 

What Skills, Knowledge and Experience are needed?

  • Interest in the natural world and WWF’s core mission;
  • University degree in natural sciences (ecology, biology, geography, aquaculture, etc), sound knowledge of river ecology; at least 1 years of basic experience in the freshwater field; general knowledge of freshwater national legislation will be  an advantage; good command of written and spoken English and Romania language;
  • Experience in participating in university or on the field  projects and projects team will be an advantage.
  • Planning and organizing skills; dynamic person, able to work both individually and within team; diplomatic and cultural skills to work with a broad array of individuals from a variety of backgrounds; ability to generate innovative approaches; reliability, integrity, trustworthiness and confidence
