Freshwater Ecology Technician

Our purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand’s aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience of natural resources to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

We are seeking a freshwater ecology technician for a permanent position in our Christchurch office. Responsibilities of this position include undertaking fieldwork, planning and logistics of fieldwork, data management and analysis as well as report writing. The position will mainly provide technical support for the Freshwater Ecology Group, but may also provide support across other groups within NIWA.

Candidates will preferably have a Masters or Honours degree in the environmental sciences, with experience in collection of periphyton, invertebrate and freshwater fish data. Experience in electric fishing is highly preferable and a high level of competency in data management is essential. Proficiency in use of Excel is essential, but experience with data wrangling in R would be advantageous. Certification for undertaking scientific diving or skippering small vessels would be an advantage. As an engaged team player, the successful candidate will enjoy working with project groups across NIWA’s sites, communicating positively and productively with a wide range of staff.
