Position Summary

NRDC is seeking a Water Affordability Intern to work the People and Communities team in our Chicago office or remotely in Lansing, Michigan.

Responsibilities

  • Help track state policies and programs on water shutoffs, water utility data transparency, affordable water rates, and related measures in partnership with the People’s Water Board Coalition.
  • Assist with obtaining project plans associated with applications for federal drinking water dollars awarded through the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
  • Participate in national, regional, and state partner meetings about policies governing the disbursement of funds and what changes need to be made to ensure an equitable distribution.

Qualifications

Required

  • Enrollment in the Social Science Scholars Program at Michigan State University.
  • Ability to work independently with clear project goals and deadlines while also engaging collaboratively with project manager and others.
  • Desire to work in partnership with community groups who are leading the fight for affordable drinking water policies.

Preferred

  • Experience with Excel spreadsheets.
  • Creativity in problem solving and investigating multiple angles of an issue.

This position is a paid internship with a stipend of $6,000 paid bi-weekly over the course of 10 weeks.

The incumbent will not qualify as an employee, fellow, volunteer, or independent contractor of NRDC, nor will the incumbent be guaranteed employment at the end of the internship term.

Our offices are open and we are operating in a hybrid model. We offer NRDCers flexibility, and we encourage them to come into the office and spend meaningful time there in collaboration with their colleagues. We call this purposeful presence.
