Watershed Planning Program Non Point Source Section  (230004U5)

Description

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.

Developing Online Visualization Tools for Nonpoint Source (NPS) Grants to Enhance Internal Grant Management and External Outreach to Potential Grantees.

The Nonpoint Source (NPS) Section coordinates the restoration of surface and groundwater impaired by NPS pollution and the protection of water quality in healthy watersheds. To that end, the NPS Section manages two grant programs related to water quality: the NPS Competitive Grants Program (319) and the Water Quality Management Planning Grant Program (604(b)). The NPS Section has implemented initiatives to increase and improve the number and quality of grant proposals it receives by increasing outreach and building capacity through technical support to potential grant applicants. The NPS Section, with the assistance of recent summer seasonal staff and interns, has developed a grant project database to create an online NPS Grant Project Map Viewer of 319 and 604(b) grant projects for prospective grant applicants to review. When completed, this Viewer will allow potential applicants, consultants, and others to see the locations and types of projects that have previously been funded and provide inspiration for the development of future projects, leading to water quality improvements. Additionally, this grant viewer, along with the other mapping tools, such as the Environmental Justice and 2018/2020 Integrated List of Waters map viewers, will help the NPS Section to identify and address specific needs in disadvantaged communities to enhance environmental justice through our grant programs. The NPS Section is seeking an intern to assist in completing previously initiated work. The intern will work independently to update the 319 and 604(b) databases and GIS data layers, develop ArcGIS online visualization tools, update the NPS website, and other assigned tasks. The intern will document project development for future reference. Intern duties will include: 1. Update the 319 and 604(b) projects databases. 2. Update the ArcGIS 319 and 604(b) project layers. 3. Update the ArcGIS Watershed-Based Plans data layer. 4. Update/finalize the ArcGIS online map viewer. 5. Develop project documentation, grant materials, and SOPs. 6. Work with MassDEP GIS staff to explore additional online visualization tools. 7. Update the NPS website to include links to databases and the map viewer. 8. Develop Story Maps of select projects.
