Local recruitment: Contracted Student Interns (Watershed Planning Program Data Mgmt & Water Quality Assessment)

Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection

Worcester, MA, USA 🇺🇸

Watershed Planning Program Data Mgmt & Water Quality Assessment   (230004S5)

Description

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.

MassDEP staff in the Watershed Planning Program (WPP) have developed and maintained a toxicity testing database (ToxTD) to support the assessment of surface waters in Massachusetts relative to water quality standards. ToxTD holds approximately 21,150 records for 303 facility/pipe combinations in Massachusetts from September 1990 through December 2021. In addition to whole effluent toxicity results, the database includes ambient water quality data and effluent data that are submitted by facilities as part of their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) surface water discharge permits. This project will continue this effort.

We are seeking an intern to assist WPP staff with updating the ToxTD database for whole effluent toxicity testing reports that have not yet been entered into the system as well as those that are currently being submitted to MassDEP.  Once trained by the Project Supervisor, the intern will be responsible for reviewing NPDES whole effluent toxicity testing reports for select database parameters.  He/she will code specific data from the toxicity report onto a data entry form, assist with data entry into ToxTD, and assist the Project Supervisor with data validation procedures.  The intern may also conduct data completeness reviews, which would include contacting permittees, consultants, and state and/or federal agency staff when additional information, clarification, and/or reporting correction is needed.

Additional duties will likely include one or more of the following:
– spatial referencing of ambient and effluent collection sites (ArcMap)
– calculation of “river miles” to georeferenced station locations
– watershed data summaries for use in permitting and assessment decisions”
