A primary focus of the Environmental Policy Officer position is to carry out research, develop policies, position papers and reports, and liaise and maintain effective networks with relevant agencies and government departments in relation to environmental and other policy matters affecting the Northern Land Council and its constituents.

Applicants should possess high level communication, report and submission writing skills, including experience in the preparation of briefs and the provision of policy advice. Demonstrated cultural competence along with the ability to engage effectively and sensitively with diverse stakeholders in a multi-disciplinary environment, and also work independently, is required.

Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Engineering, Law or related fields are essential, as is knowledge of the practices, programs and processes of government, including implementation of environmental legislation, and experience in policy analysis and development, with a demonstrated ability to undertake research.

Applicants should have a sound knowledge of the NLC and the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976 and other relevant legislation, and a good understanding of the environmental, political, social and economic issues affecting Aboriginal people in the NT.

Travel to regional and remote areas using 4WD vehicles may be involved so possession of a manual driver’s licence and ability to safely drive 4WD drive vehicles is essential, as is a willingness to fly in a light aircraft. Ability to obtain an Ochre card and Police clearance is also required.
