Job description

Job summary

This two-year Fellowship will focus on water innovation. The Fellow will help to build and drive intensive collaborations to deliver research and action-oriented recommendations in the field of water innovation.

The André Hoffmann Fellowship for the Fourth Industrial Revolution offers early-career academics the opportunity to work at the intersection of society, science and technology through a joint appointment between the World Economic Forum and Imperial College London.  In general, Hoffmann Fellows are at the earliest stages of their academic career.

The programme aims to open opportunities for candidates from underrepresented groups and institutions and actively encourages applications from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Lower Middle Income Countries (LMICs) to apply for the role.

The fellow will work closely with the College’s Global Development Hub. The Hub supports Imperial’s contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Agenda 2030, and our work more broadly with some of the most vulnerable and marginalised in societies where multiple global challenges are acutely concentrated.

More broadly, the post-holder will be part of the College’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Duties and responsibilities

The Fellowship will focus on innovation and entrepreneurship in the area of water, with the aims of identifying a strategic roadmap for transformation.  The first months of the fellowship will be used to define and shape the scope of the fellowship with both partners.

 This will include:

  • Identifying opportunities where new technologies/innovations/business models can help decision-makers in the water sector better understand and manage water resources[1]
  • Articulating a “theory of change” with specific and practical ideas to overcome key barriers that exist to scaling up the application and adoption of new technologies, and ensuring that technologies are equitable, appropriate, and accessible to all.

1 This could build on / follow up an existing report the World Economic Forum published on harnessing technology for water:  https://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_WR129_Harnessing_4IR_Water_Online.pdf

Essential requirements

  • Hold a PhD in water science/policy or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience,
  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures or qualitative methods
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in working on the nexus of technology and policy issues.
  • Practical experience within a research environment
  • Demonstrated appropriate technical skills to perform research in the field (e.g. laboratory, analytical, programming, or fieldwork skills)
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts; Able to formulate research questions and develop successful research proposals and funding bids

Further information

This is a full time, fixed term position for 24 months.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 – £41,388 per annum.

The role will be based in London, jointly working with the World Economic Forum in Geneva and Imperial College London. There is an expectation that the Fellow will travel between the WEF office in Geneva and Imperial College London, there may also be opportunities during the Fellowship for the Fellow to travel to other partners and WEF offices.

Should you require any further details on the role please contact: Professor Mike Templeton at m.templeton@imperial.ac.uk

The College is a proud signatory to the San-Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions, we evaluate applicants on the quality of their work, not the journal impact factor where it is published. For more information, see https://www.imperial.ac.uk/research-and-innovation/about-imperial-research/research-evaluation/

The College believes that the use of animals in research is vital to improve human and animal health and welfare. Animals may only be used in research programmes where their use is shown to be necessary for developing new treatments and making medical advances. Imperial is committed to ensuring that, in cases where this research is deemed essential, all animals in the College’s care are treated with full respect, and that all staff involved with this work show due consideration at every level.
