Postdoctoral Researcher (UEF WATER), Understanding Ecological Consequences of Plastics Pollution and Pharmaceuticals Pollution in Waters

University of Eastern Finland (UEF)

Joensuu, Finland 🇫🇮

Kuopio, Finland 🇫🇮

The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in understanding ecological consequences of plastics pollution and pharmaceuticals pollution in waters. The position will be filled from 1 June 2023 (or starting date as agreed) for two years. Please find more information below and submit your application no later than 13 April 2023.

Role and salary

UEF water research (UEF WATER) brings together researchers and research groups from various fields of science. The aims are to conduct research on a high international level and educate experts for water related fields. Furthermore, we aim to create an open innovation ecosystem, where stakeholders from the university, national research institutes, and water related businesses can meet and establish collaborative networks. By doing this, we aim to increase the impact of water related research and promote the sustainable use of water resources. Please read more about the UEF water research program here.

We are seeking for a highly motivated and ambitious Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the in the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology or in the School of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health Sciences, on the Joensuu or Kuopio campus.

As our new Postdoctoral Researcher, you will conduct the research that aims to understanding ecological, and possibly evolutionary, consequences of plastics pollution and pharmaceuticals pollution in waters/catchment areas. The research will be carried out by experimental set ups with aquatic invertebrates and teleost fishes as models. This effort will provide us better understanding of the single and joint effects of nanoparticle pollution and pharmaceutical pollution. It is already known that small scale plastic particles can act as “vectors” for other pollutants including pharmaceuticals, but possible harmful “double-stressor” effects on biology of natural organisms have been poorly understood. The experiments will include exposing organisms to pollutants in single exposures and in mixtures. The most focus on these studies will be in physiological, behavioural, and reproduction-related traits, and the data could be potentially later utilized in future modelling efforts.

In this position you will co-operate with the other researchers working in the research group, reflecting that work to the modelling approaches to be developed for water management purposes. UEF Water research program

The position will be filled for a fixed term, from 1 June 2023 (or starting date as agreed) for two years, due to it pertaining to tasks connected to UEF water research development. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
