Job Description:

FEN Consulting (part of the SAS Environmental Group of Companies) requires a field wetland ecologist that can work independently and in a team to gather field data considering the ecology of project areas focusing on wetland ecology. Good working knowledge of wetland soils, vegetation, the various wetland assessment tools and wetland functionality is required. The appointee will also be expected to do desktop research, data analyses and undertake basic GIS analyses and mapping. The appointee will be required to apply the relevant wetland assessment tools, develop scientifically accurate specialist reports and to undertake specialist impact assessments. Good, sound scientific writing abilities are a must as the job entails extensive report writing. The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of broader ecology, must have experience with wetland delineation and the functional assessment thereof. Additionally, the appointee will be required to assist with the application of Water Use Licences. On the job training will be provided to allow the appointee to assist with other ecological studies in other disciplines undertaken by the company. The appointee will be required to attend workshop meetings and presentations from time to time. The appointee must be willing to travel extensively and can expect to sleep out as and when required

Qualifications, experience and requirements:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of a B.Sc. Hons. (or higher) Degree in soil science, botany or another appropriate degree in environmental or ecological science (such as geography, hydrology). Wetland related subjects would be advantageous. The ideal appointee has one or more years of working experience in consulting and specialist report compilation. Experience with the application of Water Use Licences would be an advantage. Candidates must have background of the relevant environmental legislative requirements for specialist assessments, with specific focus on the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA) and the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998) (NWA). Candidates with the relevant training and work experience in broader environmental consulting can also be considered. SACNASP registered scientists will be preferred.
