The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The position is in the Urban Planning and Design unit in Beirut, Lebanon.

After the 2006 July War, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) initiated its Country Programme in Lebanon, responding to emerging issues through housing reconstruction, shelter provision and upgrading basic services, while laying the foundation for long-term sustainable solutions by means of urban profiling (including neighborhood profiling) and other research, as well as urban policy analyses.

UN-Habitat Lebanon has been working effectively with partners and urban planning actors at the community, national and international levels for the past 15 years to develop and implement programmes and interventions that contribute to the achievement of the targets of Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Urban Planning and Design unit, Beirut Lebanon Internship is for 6 (six) months.

The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the interns’ assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Planning & Infrastructure Engineer – Urban Planning & Design Unit Manager the intern will:

  • Assists in the acquisition of information required by the project(s) through desk and field research.
  • Assists in the analysis of collected data under the supervision of the project(s) coordinator(s).
  • Prepares detailed Bill of Quantities (BoQs), technical drawings, and specifications based on preliminary site assessments and national and international engineering practices, etc.
  • Contributes to the development of engineering designs.
  • Contributes to the implementation of feasibility analyses including cost estimates for individual project components.
  • Joins the UPDU team field visits, performs site inspections as requested and submits field visit reports.
  • Supports the UPDU in the daily implementation of engineering projects.
  • Attends project coordination meetings and prepares meeting minutes.
  • Assists in the assessment of permitting requirements.
  • Supports the preparation and review of Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) of specific projects and assists external consultants in the preparation of environmental assessments.
  • Follows up on irrigation water/treated wastewater quality testing, and reports to the project coordinator.
  • Follows up with implementing partners/contractors on a daily basis, as requested by the project coordinator.
  • Supports in any task required to ensure the programme’s sustainability and growth.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies:
Engineering in a relevant discipline (civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resources management, environment/water policy) or related field of study.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Knowledge in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and able to use computer
programmes easily is required.

Experience in the preparation of professional environmental assessment reports such EIAs, ESIAs, IEEs, and ESMPs is desirable.

Knowledge of climate change adaptation measures in the water sector such as reuse of treated
wastewater, rainwater harvesting, and sustainable irrigation and agricultural practices is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in written and oral English and Arabic are required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
