Job Purpose

World Vision South Sudan (WVSS) seeks a Senior Project Manager (SPM) to lead a climate resilience project implemented in two counties of Aweil East and Aweil Centre in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State in South Sudan. This project will build long term climate resilience among agro-pastoral communities using participatory watershed-based approaches that restore ecosystems. It will re-establish and strengthen market linkages and agricultural value chains and equip extension agencies to support communities in adopting gender-responsive, climate smart agricultural practices and diversifying livelihoods using hands-on, farmer-field based approaches. Climate change will be mainstreamed into management plans and programs in agriculture and natural resource management (NRM) and proactive collaboration and knowledge sharing will build synergies with other relevant initiatives.

The Senior Project Manager will provide oversight of implementation, quality and technical strategies for all project objectives and outputs. S/he ensures accurate implementation according to set minimum standards and in alignment with the approved proposal/ contracting measures and donor regulation, ensuring all activities are implemented in time and according to budgets and detailed implementation plan (DIP). S/he will closely collaborate with the project’s sectoral managers and finance staff along the project cycle ensuring everyone receives necessary management support and direction to deliver tasks as planned. The staff will be based in Malual Akon Town in Aweil East County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State in South Sudan.

Job Responsibilities

Lead a project team of five staff and assure implementation according to work plans and budgets for all objectives and activities implemented through the project, advising on and executing adjustments and revisions when necessary.

– Provide technical guidance to landscape restoration approaches, including natural resource management (NRM) and climate smart agriculture interventions, advising on adjustments when necessary.

– External representation with local authorities, government ministries, community leaders, and the donor.

– Facilitate coordination with other recovery and development focused projects in the target counties.

– Perform other duties as required or assigned by line manager.

Required Professional Experience

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a humanitarian or development related field
  • Technical expertise and minimum of 7 years demonstrated experience in ecosystem-based adaptation or in participatory landscape (or watershed) restoration, including application of land-use planning, community-based NRM assessments, soil water conservation / water-buffering approaches, climate-smart agriculture and/or another field relevant to the project themes
  • Contextual understanding of climate change in Horn of Africa and impacts on agro-pastoral communities, particularly women
  • At least 3-5 years of proven ability in the management of large integrated projects in fragile contexts
  • Ability to master and implement donor regulations and coordination; experience with UNDP is a plus, experience with other bilateral donors such as USAID, GAC, FCDO and others will also be considered favourably
  • Experience working/living in hardship conditions. Familiarity and past experience in South Sudan context is a plus
  • Ability to integrate and align teams of professionals around common goals
  • Strong verbal communication skills, strong presentation and report writing skills

Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field is preferred
  • Experience leading diverse teams

Based in Aweil East County Northern Bahr el Ghazal State

Fluency in written and spoken English

Knowledge of spoken Arabic is a plus
