Applications are open for one Research Grant, within the framework of project HYDROVAR (2022.03921.PTDC) of IST-ID, funded by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC

Workplan: The research fellow will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

  • Modelling the soil water dynamics on an agricultural plot with the MOHID-Land model. Maps of the soil hydraulic properties to be developed based on the survey carried out with electromagnetic methods and the relations achieved with the basic soil properties should be used;
  • Model the soil water dynamics at the scale of the irrigation perimeter (regional scale) with the MOHID-Land model. Compare the existing digital products of soil hydraulic properties in the water balance;
  • Evaluate the effect of agricultural practices on water and nutrient dynamics using the MOHID-Land model at the regional scale.

Duration: The research grant will have the duration of 12 months. It is expected to begin in March 2023 and the grant contract can, if justified, be renewed until the end of the project. When the PhD degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the grant contract, it may be concluded under the contractual terms established.

Monthly maintenance allowance: According to the values for Research Fellowships awarded by FCT in Portugal (, the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is 1,144.64 €, being the payment method (by Wire Transfer or Cheque) an option of the Research Fellow. The grant holder will be reimbursed of the payment of Voluntary Social Security (up to the amount corresponding to the 1st grade).

Admission Requirements: candidates must be enrolled in a PhD at the date of signing of the research grant contract. In addition, they must have have a Master’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Agricultural or Environmental Engineering.

Selection process

Selection methods: The selection methods will be the following:

  • Knowledge in Hydrology and Soils: 20% (0/20);
  • Knowledge of the MOHID Land model and experience in hydrodynamic and operational modelling using the MOHID system: 20% (0/20);
  • Programming skills (Fortran, C++, visualbasic, Matlab, Python): 10% (0/20);
  • Individual interview (in case of tie between the best classified candidates), where motivation and specific knowledge will be evaluated: 50% (0/20).
