Part Time Researcher (Policy-relevant Aquatic Environmental Research)

Penn State Behrend is looking for a Part-Time Researcher. This position will support policy-relevant aquatic environmental research focused on Ballast Water transfers of aquatic species in the Great Lakes. This is a 100% remote, part time position for up to 10 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a part-time researcher on an externally-funded project focused on ballast water transfers of aquatic species.
  • Assists with reporting obligations of the grant and dissemination of results via the scientific literature.
  • May participate in international, national and regional fora that address ballast water mediated transfer of aquatic species.


  • Masters degree in a discipline related to environmental policy.
  • 20+ years experience managing projects and administering programs involving multiple, diverse stakeholders.
  • 20+ years experience as a leader in the field of ballast water-mediated transfer of aquatic invasive species
  • 10+ years experience developing policy options for control of ballast water-mediated transfer of aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes.
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with regulatory frameworks for preventing ballast water discharges detrimental to freshwater receiving systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop positive relations with multiple stakeholders and to facilitate collaborative planning processes.
  • Excellent representational, presentation and writing skills.
  • Successful grant-writing experience.
  • Willingness to work remotely
