Position: Water Internship Program Trainer/Community Coordinator

Term: 6 month contract with strong potential for extension to 24 months.

Water First addresses First Nations’ drinking water and environmental challenges through education, training and meaningful collaboration. As a non-profit organization experiencing significant growth, we’re looking for a vibrant individual who can further develop, implement, and grow our water education and training programs in close collaboration with First Nations communities.

The position involves supporting a water science internship training project in partnership with a dozen First Nations communities associated with the Bimose Tribal Council, based out of Kenora, Ontario. Most of the work can be facilitated from home, in northwestern Ontario or southeastern Manitoba/Winnipeg, however significant travel to the participating First Nations 20 - 30% of the time, is mandatory.

Title: Water Internship Program Trainer/Community Coordinator

Salary: $55,000 - $75,000 full-time annual salary range, commensurate with credentials & experience

Start date: As soon as available, no later than Jan 15, 2020.

Duration: 6 month contract with strong potential for extension to 24 months. 

Location: Winnipeg/Kenora


  • Delivering water science focused training sessions
    • Including fundamentals of water chemistry, parameters, sampling & monitoring techniques & data management regarding drinking water and environmental water quality
  • First Nations community relations & project coordination
    • Coordinating project components with partners and communities (e.g., band office managers, water treatment plant operations, Chief and Council, etc.)
  • Coordinating intern hiring process, daily work tasks, exam preparation, post-secondary school and post internship support
  • Evaluations and internal/external reporting
  • Internship manualing and documenting for future program iterations



  • Related degree, diploma or certification in one or more of the following fields: drinking water or wastewater treatment, water engineering, hydrology, water chemistry, environmental science
  • Experience in teaching mature students (running workshops, developing curriculum)
  • Experience in drinking water, wastewater, and surface water sampling, monitoring and laboratory testing
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in coordinating community projects and working with multiple stakeholders
  • Regular access to a vehicle & willingness to travel to northern First Nations communities approximately 20 - 30% of the time
    • Class G (or MB equivalent) drivers license in good standing
  • Ability to work from home in the Winnipeg/Kenora area
    • Must be able to travel by vehicle to Kenora regularly
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and awareness
  • Ability to learn new skills and adapt to a changing work environment


  • Advanced degree in one of the fields of study above
  • Experience with ArcGIS mapping software
  • Operator-in-training (Water and Wastewater) and Water Quality Analyst Certification (or MB equivalent)
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership experience and excellence
  • Experience with First Nations community engagement.
