Local recruitment: Science Summer Internship (2023 Intern Campaign)

Scottish Water

Edinburgh, UK 🇬🇧

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Every year, Scottish Water is pleased to host a variety of summer internship programmes, open to university students in the penultimate year of their degree programmes. This is a fantastic opportunity to apply your studies and challenge yourself to develop your practical skills in line with your future career aspirations.

We are delighted this year to be able to offer a 12-week Summer Internship from June to September 2023, specialising in Microbiology or Chemistry.

What might life look like as a Science Intern?

Scottish Water’s Summer Internship scheme will give you a taste of what it feels like to work in one of the largest water companies in the world.

Science skills in the water sector are growing in significance as the world confronts the interlinked threats of climate change, resource sustainability, pollution and population growth.

Scottish Water’s business is inextricably linked to these challenges and requires strong scientific developments, capabilities and skills going forward to deliver advances in treatment approaches to ensure that Scottish Water successfully addresses future water and wastewater compliance issues, supports sustainable economic growth and delivers a resilient and good value service for our customers.

As a Science Intern, will have the opportunity to work in one of our analytical laboratories, working under a ISO17025 management system. You will get the chance to apply your university studies to a live operational lab environment, whilst learning from our on-site scientists.

We have various opportunities available, focussed on either Chemistry or Microbiology, based in either our Edinburgh or Inverness Laboratory.

What does a successful candidate look like?

To be eligible to apply for this internship programme you will be a penultimate year student (for example in your third year of a four-year course, or in your fourth year but going on to study a master’s degree).

You will be studying towards a degree discipline in either Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Applied Sciences or Natural Sciences. You will also have excellent data management skills. To get the most from the programme you’ll be ready to engage fully in the development opportunities that are available to you.
