1.         Context

Jal Seva Charitable Foundation (JSCF) is registered in India as a not for profit company under Chapter 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. JSCF, is an associate member of WaterAid International and uses the brand name ‘WaterAid’ in India.

WaterAid India seeks to improve access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene for everyone, everywhere.

We started in 1986 because no non-profit like us existed. We are determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. Only by tackling these three essentials, in ways that last, can people change their lives for good.

In India, WaterAid works with communities in rural and urban areas. WaterAid India’s (WAI) country office is based in New Delhi with State Offices in Bhopal, Raipur, Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Patna and Lucknow. We currently work in 11+ states across the country.

WAI’s Programme focus in the next five years is on ensuring that communities – especially low- income families – are WASH secure i.e. with assured access to safe drinking water at the household level, with safely managed sanitation, institutions such as anganwadi’s, schools and health care facilities with adequate and appropriate health-care infrastructure and with good hygiene behaviors. We seek to do this through demonstration and the provision of technical and knowledge support to governments at all levels who can facilitate this adoption on scale.

2.         Purpose

To lead and implement the media and communications strategy in terms of awareness-raising on WASH issues and visibility thereby positioning WaterAid as the leading WASH organisation in India. To help create a brand-identity for WaterAid India and to facilitate raising resources within the country.

3.         Responsibilities

  • Design and implement effective communication strategies to increase awareness on key thematic issues – Brand, Media, Content and Digital strategies for WaterAid India.
  • Leading WaterAid India’s aspiration strategically to make it a digital first organization from brand awareness, media & communications perspective and complimenting resource mobilization initiatives in this format.
  • Team Management – Team members comprising of Digital, Website & Social Media, Content development, and Media & PR profiles.

Digital, Website and Social Media Management:

  • Support and guide the Website and Social Media Coordinator in ensuring an appropriate Digital strategy for website, Social Media and other mediums and implementation plan for WaterAid India
  • Support and guide the Website and Social Media Coordinator in maintenance and upgrades of the WaterAid India website, landing pages, microsites, gateways, mobile technology and across various social media channels
  • Managing SEO, SEM, Key words, Paid media, AB testing, retargeting, cookies to amplify WaterAid’s digital presence and boost online traffic
  • Ideate, Conceptualize, Run ROI based digital campaigns – Awareness, Consideration and Conversion in collaboration with Resource Mobilisation and Advocacy teams
  • Generate appropriate analytics and audience segmentation metrics with help of listening tools on periodic basis and share MIS reports with management
  • Managing brand compliant digital content, updates and creatives and promote WaterAid India’s digital properties on various mediums not limited to website and SM handles
  • Explore effective ways to improve stakeholder and donor experience on our digital properties and adapt new avenues like mobile technology and Mobile Apps etc.
  • Support Website and Media Coordinator in managing Digital Agency for running social media and other campaigns
  • Coordinate and collaborate with different departments like content, media, fundraising, programs, PMEL, Technical and Advocacy teams and WaterAid Federation members to ensure appropriate update 

Traditional Media and PR Management:

  • Support and guide the Media Officer in effective formulation and implementation of a media strategy/ plan at national and regional levels
  • Establish, maintain and cultivate relationship-based networks with media houses, news agencies, TV and Radio channels – English, Hindi and in vernacular languages to amplify WaterAid’s work
  • Support and guide the Media Officer for effective PR – in arranging press releases, press conferences, news briefings, media interviews, visits and public events. Facilitate, monitoring of relevant media coverage and keep abreast of developments on WASH related issues in India
  • Write press releases, press briefings, press statements, media and campaign Q&As, place articles, OPEDs in the appropriate media, and clear internal memos on media developments
  • Assess the general reaction of the public to the work of WaterAid on the basis of information gathered from media, organised groups and correspondence
  • Build capacity of WaterAid staff in relation to media though the development of training materials and programmes, facilitating training sessions for staff where possible/necessary and briefing staff on campaign objectives/messages
  • Evaluate all media work against WaterAid’s standards/guidelines/practices to feed into future media strategies
  • Ensure consistency of media messaging from all staff, including monitoring that WaterAid’s media protocols are followed
  • Responsible for media coverage of campaigns including identifying and creating opportunities for media work (e.g. incorporating campaign issues into staff work plans) and identifying internal and external events that provide platforms for media work

Content Development and Documentation Management:

  • Support and guide the Content Officer in effective formulation and implementation of a Content strategy/ plan at national and regional levels and its interlinkages with other functions
  • Conceptualize, initiate and facilitate the production of suitable communication material/ content
  • e.g. photo-video documentation, films, videos, audio-visuals, case studies etc., and oversee the qualitative aspects of production, e.g., quality control, translation, review of layouts and graphic design
  • Organizing and storing the content in a meaningful way to feed in to other units for effective utilization
  • Support the different functions like Programs, Policy, Fundraising teams in developing appropriate IEC materials (Information, Education and Communication) for use by partners – government, voluntary organizations, fundraising initiatives, donors etc.
  • Facilitate documentation through various mediums on the work we do for a diverse set of audiences.
  • Supporting creation of reports, documents etc. with appropriate proof reading
  • Empanel and manage content producers – like photographers, videographers, case study writers, report writers, translators etc.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in grants management, Res Mobilisation, program, advocacy teams

Brand Awareness Management:

  • Ensure effective brand strategy and guidelines for WaterAid India
  • Follow WaterAid’s global brand guidelines and implementation for consistency across the board
  • Ensuring all communications material and digital presence is brand compliant
  • Manage influencers, Brand Ambassadors, celebrities for WaterAid India
  • Conceptualize, develop and review all relevant marketing communication (in coordination with the Resource Mobilisation function) to ensure alignment with the organisation’s policies and positions
  • Represent WaterAid India to the external world in consultation and under guidance of the Director- RMC and CE, WA India

General Communications Management

  • Build and maintain a good understanding of the type of programme information required for the evolving needs of WaterAid India, ensuring quality standards are met in all external communications
  • Support the resource mobilisation team in efforts to raise resources for our work in India through effective brand-building and communication efforts.
  • Collaborate with WaterAid’s global communications team, respond to queries and ensure WaterAid (India’s) work is well represented on websites etc.
  • Safeguard the ethical standards and principles of WaterAid within the communication activities
  • Supervise and evaluate functional team members; provide advice regarding communication issues when required; further develop the overall communication capacity within WaterAid
  • Contribute as required in the strategic planning and development of policies in the organisation
  • Ensure consistency across all communication vis-à-vis the brand
  • Vendor and Agency management – Digital Agency, Creative and design, Photo-video documentation – photographers, videographers, case study writers, translators etc.

4.         Eligibilities and requirements Education

Post-graduate degree in Mass Communications, Media or an equivalent field, from a reputed institute

Experience

Between 10 to 15 years of relevant work experience out of which at least five years of leadership in the media or communications industry.

  • Strategic minded and results oriented
  • High level communications skills in English, Hindi or any other Indian language (both written and verbal), good editing skills, and ability to tailor communication materials for different audience
  • A good understanding of issues of development sector, programme learning and media advocacy
  • Experience of leveraging various media and digital communication channels to reach and engage with different audiences
  • Good network of media contacts in India
  • Strong Website & Social Media Management skills
  • Strong computer literacy, including ability to use word-processing, spread sheets and database software
  • Team Management and inter-personal skills to deliver on objectives
  • Willingness to travel significantly
  • Published work, print, films, audio-visuals, etc.
