Short description of the position: 

The Climate and Disaster Risk group at Eurac Research is working on methods and tools for climate risk assessments in the context of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. In this context we are looking for a motivated junior researcher to support us in an international project aiming to improve the mainstreaming/standardisation of tools for climate- and disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. The aim of the activities is to advance research on the conceptualization of potential risk pathways within complex, multi-hazard and cascaded events related to natural hazards. The research activity will be based on the impact chain method developed by the Eurac Climate and Disaster Research Group and published in the Vulnerability Sourcebook and its Risk Supplement (Zebisch et al., 2014 and GIZ and EURAC, 2017). 

The successful candidate will work on the further development of impact chains´ methodology, integrating this with forensic analysis for disaster risk reduction.

The successful candidate will also have the possibility to carry out the above-mentioned activities within the framework of a PhD programme.   


  • Background research and analysis on risk drivers and impacts for past events connected to multi hazards;
  • Development of a consistent scheme for identifying sets of standardised risk elements and relationships;
  •  Support the development of an impact chain ontology and taxonomy for different sectors;
  • Applying a mixed-method approach combining qualitative/participatory methods with data collection and analysis.


  • Master’s degree in geography, environmental sciences, environmental management, land use planning or a comparable course of study;
  • Ability in team working, good communication, motivation to learn and personal initiative;
  • Proficient command of English, written and spoken;
  • Very good knowledge of Microsoft Office Programmes.


  • Experience designing and working with relational and semantic databases;
  • Experience with mixed-method approaches;
  • good German and/or Italian desirable.
