The Aquatic Resources Field Technician will report directly to the Great Lakes Field Coordinator and will assist TU staff with projects aimed to restore aquatic connectivity, in-stream, and riparian habitat, and promote the long-term values associated with aquatic restoration.  Project duties will primarily include field data collection using a variety of field and survey equipment (e.g., tablet, laser level, total station, etc.). Other duties will/may include various biological assessments, assisting with on-the-ground implementation efforts (e.g., riparian plantings), and possible assistance in project planning, construction oversight, public engagement, and project monitoring.  The anticipated employment date range is late May through October 2023. Project work areas will be located primarily in Michigan鈥檚 Central and Western Upper Peninsula. 


Conduct a variety of stream surveys including 

  • fisheries surveys 
  • geomorphic assessments
  • aquatic organism passage assessments
  • other biological assessments 
  • Attend project planning meetings as necessary
  • Assist in the planning, training and coordination of volunteer-based programs

路 Working towards or completed a B.S. in a field related to fisheries management, aquatic ecology, watershed management, geomorphology, or biological systems engineering. 

路 Experience using biological field equipment (e.g., electrofishing equipment, surveying equipment, D-nets, etc.).

路 Experience with biological assessments (e.g., macroinvertebrates, fish, habitat, etc.).

路 Experience with data entry using Microsoft Excel and Access.

路 Working knowledge of principles and practices of aquatic resource management.

路 Ability to work independently and in a team setting. 

路 Self-motivated and highly energetic, with excellent time-management skills.

路 Ability to work in rugged terrain often transporting heavier field equipment.

路 Ability and willingness to travel. Valid driver鈥檚 license and own vehicle required.

路 The position will require frequent overnight to relatively remote areas. 

路 Some weekend and evening work may be required. 

路 Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds.
