The work proposed includes the following activities:
work on computer, participation to team meetings and project meetings, coordination and data exchange with the project partners, oral or poster communication at scientific conferences, publication of scientific articles, contribution to project deliverables.

Located in a transitional climate zone, the Mediterranean Sea is strongly impacted by human-induced climate change. Significant trends have already been detected for sea surface temperature, marine heat waves, sea level, deep water thermohaline characteristics and air-sea fluxes. Similarly, several recent studies have shown that strong changes are expected during the 21st century for many parameters of ocean physics and marine biology if greenhouse gas concentrations are not stabilized in the coming decades. On the other hand, to our knowledge, there are few studies concerning the future evolution of Mediterranean Sea surface currents and surface turbulence and the few existing studies (Adloff et al. 2015, Ser Giacomi et al. 2020, de la Vara et al. 2022 are all based on a mono-model approach that does not provide robust results. However, these aspects present strong potential impacts on marine species and in particular on larval dispersal, a phenomenon that is essential for the resilience of ecosystems and the maintenance of biodiversity in the Mediterranean.
The objective of this contract is to tackle this scientific challenge. In particular, we aim to characterize in a robust way the possible evolution of the Mediterranean Sea surface circulation, taking into account the uncertainties inherent to regional climate change projections, and to understand the physical processes involved in these evolutions. We will relate these circulation changes to associated steric and dynamic sea level trends. The approach will be through realistic modeling of the Mediterranean Sea, relying in particular on the 6th generation of the CNRM regional climate system model (CNRM-RCSM6, Darmaraki et al. 2019b, but also on the coordinated multi-model ensemble produced in the framework of the international Med-CORDEX initiative (
The main missions of the proposed position are to (1) take in hand the CNRM-RCSM6 model including a fine presentation of the Mediterranean Sea to perform climate projection simulations up to 2100, (2) collect similar simulations performed in the framework of the Med-CORDEX initiative, (3) analyze the results of the simulations to characterize the possible future evolution of the Mediterranean Sea surface circulation and sterodynamic sea level, and (4) valorize the obtained results through scientific publications. The simulations to be carried out are relatively framed by the Med-CORDEX protocol but, on the other hand, the selected candidate will have a large degree of freedom concerning the scientific exploitation of the simulations. The work will be carried out in the framework of the national project PopNCo (see below).

The Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM, ) is a joint Météo-France and CNRS laboratory located in Toulouse, one of the most liveable and vibrant cities in France. It is one of the leading climate science research institutes in Europe. It provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to great scientific facilities.

The successful fellow will work in the regional climate modelling research team (, a 13-member team, leaded by Samuel Somot ( ) including PhD students, postdocs, junior and senior researchers as well as research engineers. In addition to Samuel Somot, the close scientific environment will consist of Robin Waldman (, and Florence Sevault.

The advertised position is funded by the national ANR PopNCo project which involves many leading French research institutes in oceanographic sciences. Faced with the increasing risks of global change induced by human activities on biodiversity and marine resources, knowing the long-term effectiveness of current management strategies is a major challenge. PopNCo is interested in the robustness of estimates of a key parameter considered in marine spatial planning, population connectivity, and its trend in relation to climate variations. Defined as the exchange of individuals between subpopulations, the main driver of population and species renewal and persistence, it relies mainly (and exclusively for fixed coastal species) on the dispersion of pelagic larvae. It thus depends on the complex interaction between ocean circulation and species’ life traits, two factors strongly influenced by climate variability. In this context, the objective of PopNCo is to explore temporal changes in connectivity by estimating the interannual variability of connectivity in past and present climates and comparing it to its expected long-term trend induced by climate change.

Eligibility criteria

1) A Ph.D. in atmospheric, oceanic or climate sciences, obtained before the start date of the contract
2) Experience in one of the following scientific fields will be appreciated but is not mandatory: climate change, oceanography, regional climate scenarios, Mediterranean Sea
3) Demonstrated programming skills for scientific analysis and plotting (python, R, NCL or equivalent), and demonstrated experience working in a Linux environment (shell scripts, …)
4) Experience analyzing massive ocean numerical simulation data, working on high performance computers and/or manipulating climate data (e.g., netcdf, nco, cdo format, …) will be highly valued but is not required
5) Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. French would be useful but is not required
