The Department of Civil Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY) of The City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of environmental engineering. The start date for the position is Fall 2024, with an option to begin sooner.

We seek applicants who will join us in leading the efforts to evolve water and wastewater infrastructure to become resilient to climate change, sustainable, and socially and environmentally equitable; and in areas that are complementary to our on-going research efforts in domestic water/wastewater engineering. Specific areas of interest to the department include, but are not limited to innovations in: water resource recovery and valorization; technology applications for process control such as connected and automated instrumentation; modeling and system management approaches that leverage emerging data streams; biological wastewater treatment; biological process modeling and optimization; and water/wastewater treatment of PFAS, microplastics, endocrine disruptors, disinfection by-products and other emerging contaminants.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent and externally-funded researchprogram; to effectively teach fundamental and applied undergraduate and advanced graduate courses in civil and environmental engineering; and to actively participate in departmental committees, student club activities, and professional services.

The Department of Civil Engineering has 18 full-time faculty members in four areas of concentration: Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, Transportation, and Water Resource Engineering. Our faculty engage in a wide range of research efforts with international, national, regional, and local agencies, as well as private entities to address both complex infrastructure demands and challenges locally and globally. Our faculty also participate in interdisciplinary research activities and educational programs within and outside CCNY. Our faculty lead several interdisciplinary programs including the CREST Institute and the Center for Water Resources and Environmental Research, the CUNY Institute for Urban Systems, the Institute for Municipal Waste Research, the Institute for Transportation Systems, the NOAA Center for Earth Systems Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies, and the University Transportation Research Center.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering, and have a demonstrated record of scholarly achievements and excellence. Applicants with a background in environmental engineering/science and who are able to foster collaborations within and outside the department are encouraged to apply. Those who qualify and are willing to obtain a Professional Engineering license are also encouraged to apply.


Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.


Contractual Base Salaries:

Associate Professor: $67,784- $117,805

Assistant Professor $52,267-$99,532

Salaries above the contractual base are available commensurate with experience and PSC- CUNY contract.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
