RWTH Aachen University is one of the most renowned technical universities in Europe with approx. 42,000 students and approx. 10,000 employees. As part of the RWTH, we currently employ 22 scientific staff and 13 technical and administrative staff at the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management. In addition to our offices, we also have our own laboratory hall with over 2,000 square metres of test space.

We are looking for a staff member to work on a research project in the field of adaptation possibilities of the rail transport infrastructure with regard to heavy rain events as soon as possible. The project will be worked on together with partners from the field of rail infrastructure and, in addition to looking at past heavy rainfall events, will also include future requirements, for example with regard to climate change and its consequences. 

Your Profile

Your profile for a successful entry into our team should include an above-average university degree (Master or comparable) in civil engineering, industrial engineering or environmental engineering with a specialisation in hydraulic engineering or environment. In addition, you should have enthusiasm and in-depth (study) knowledge in the field of hydraulic engineering/water management or other water-related topics. If, in addition to these professional requirements, you also have the following qualities, you are very welcome to apply for the position of research assistant:

  • Willingness to travel abroad (sometimes outside Europe)

Your Duties and Responsibilities

As a research assistant, you will be qualified both professionally and personally. In the course of time, you will work on tasks in the following areas of activity:

Research – In the area of research, you will work on a research project to develop a roadmap to increase the resilience of rail infrastructure to heavy rainfall. The project will be carried out in close cooperation with partners from the transport sector as well as experienced colleagues from our institute on the topic of heavy rainfall and flooding. As part of our Coastal and Flood Research Group, you will be integrated into a team of several colleagues and will be able to conduct your own research within this professional and supportive framework. 

Dissemination – Through workshops lasting one or more days, congress participation as well as presentations and publications, you will transfer our research results and findings into practice and into the scientific context. At national and international events, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts and managers, develop new ideas and make contacts.

Teaching – For students at RWTH Aachen University, we offer lectures, practice sessions, excursions and student theses. Every member of staff assists in the various areas of teaching and thus gets to know the core competencies of teaching. 

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of 1 year.
An extension for at least 2 years is planned. The option to extend the contract for 3 further years is available.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
