We are currently seeking a motivated Spatial Ecological Modeller to join our newly-created CSIRO Environment business unit, in an ongoing role!

In this role, you will become an integral part of our diverse team of talented researchers and modellers within the ‘Managing Water Ecosystems’ Group, that focuses on investigating how water ecosystems respond to flow regimes including different water resource management strategies. While your role will have a primary focus on the Murray-Darling Basin, you will also have opportunities to be involved in a variety of other major research initiatives across Australia. You will bring your valuable ecological and spatial modelling experience to design, develop and expand research initiatives, and strategically enhance the scientific understanding of different ecosystems and their response to management. Managing successful interactions with external clients and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships would also be a key component of your role.

Your duties will include:

  • Applying or developing approaches using modelling, spatial analysis, remote sensing and machine learning that progresses understanding of temporal dynamics of ecological and ecosystem change.
  • Incorporating ecological understanding of freshwater systems, as well as adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for existing & future research projects, across spatial scales including basin scale.
  • Developing models and modelling tools, including at systems scales and decision-based support systems providing recommendations that can be used by water managers.
  • Interacting with key clients, other research programs in CSIRO Environment Business Unit and across various Business Units within CSIRO, and with external project-based research partners.
  • Developing and leading a variety of research projects.
  • Drawing on professional expertise, knowledge and research experience to recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with scientific colleagues across a range of disciplines.

Salary: AU$105K – AU$114K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD in spatial science, ecology or relevant discipline area, with skills in freshwater ecology, machine learning techniques and modelling.
  • Demonstrated skills in working with and managing ‘big data’ including use of data platforms, such as Google Earth Engine including excellence in script production using Python and R.
  • Extensive experience in environmental research with established networks, particularly related to modified rivers, and an understanding of the research needs and ecological issues within Australian river systems.
  • A demonstrated history of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals and contribution to client reports.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to publish results and present to a range of audiences.
  • Demonstration of ability to effectively work in multi-disciplinary teams, and ability to undertake independent individual research, to achieve organisational goals.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
  • Experience in developing new projects.
