The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor nine-month faculty position in the area of Conservation Science.

Conservation science spans the natural and social sciences to address the decline of biodiversity, from organisms to ecosystems and their services, and to identify strategies to reverse these declines. Conservation science is more important than ever: climate change, land conversion, unsustainable consumption, water scarcity, wildfire, disease, and invasive species are affecting the diversity and abundance of species, as well as the livelihoods and well-being of people. Conservation science is interdisciplinary and applied by necessity; combining aspects of biology, ecology, geography, and environmental policy, management, and justice; to dissect threats and generate solutions to stem biodiversity loss and its social impacts.

We seek applicants whose work addresses conservation science in a broad sense, including (but not limited to) the application of approaches from population or community ecology, wildlife or fisheries conservation, forest or rangeland science, conservation data science, protected area or working lands management, and conservation governance, policy or effectiveness.

We encourage applicants whose research contributes to an integrated understanding of how diverse toolsets in conservation science can support conservation planning and action. These toolsets include ​​population and landscape modeling, remote sensing, land-use forecasting, molecular ecology, participatory methods and planning, and governance and policy analysis.

ESPM is a multidisciplinary community of scholars and Cooperative Extension Specialists from the biological, physical, and social sciences and the humanities who conduct research, teaching, and outreach to advance scientific understanding and develop solutions for the world’s pressing environmental problems. Home to a top-ranked Ph.D. program in environmental science, environmental studies, and ecological/evolutionary biology, our undergraduate students have a choice of vibrant majors that span the disciplines in the department. Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Applicants for this position must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) granting program at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications

The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, potential for funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and research mentoring of undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-docs.
  • Demonstrate excellence, originality, and productivity in research record in any area of Conservation Science, including biological, biogeographic and social/policy emphases.
  • Demonstrate strong process-based research skills and a potential to establish an innovative research agenda, to communicate their work effectively to a broader public, and to work with other researchers from diverse disciplines.
