Lycoming College is hiring a Director of the Lycoming College Clean Water Institute (CWI).  For over 25 years, the Lycoming College Clean Water Institute (CWI) has worked with the Biology Department and most recently the Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences (CEAE) to provide opportunities for fieldwork, internships and research in all areas of ecology and aquatic biology.

What will I do in this role?

  • Manage operation and strategy of CWI, working with current research associate, faculty and staff and developing new partnerships.
  • Manage the Lycoming Biology Field Station, INC.
  • Supervise CWI interns, especially during the summer intern program.
  • Support course instruction or lab work as needed when connected to CWI or Field Station.
  • Maintain the CWI lab spaces and keep field / lab equipment calibrated
  • Manage current CWI grant projects and work with College Advancement Office to develop new sources of funding (external grants and endowment funding).
  • Co-advise and support students in the Environmental Science minor and participate in the implementation of the Environmental Science major under consideration (including teaching 1 course per year).
  • Support programs of the Sustainability Committee.
  • Develop and/or participate in the educational outreach programs especially with the Waterdale Environmental Center, the Biology Field Station, local K-12 schools and other conservation organizations.

What are we looking for?

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology or closely related field.
  • Experience as a freshwater ecologist in a research or restoration-oriented field.
  • Experience as a teacher or research mentor.
  • Knowledge of freshwater ecology, recent and foundational scientific literature and contemporary field and lab methods.
  • Working knowledge of GIS, quantitative data analysis and scientific writing.
  • Effective communication in verbal and written forms, problems solving, self-motivation, initiative and simultaneously managing multiple priorities.
  • This position also requires willingness and interest in developing skills in equipment construction and maintenance, grant writing and external partnership development.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, along with a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable of the College’s insurance.
  • We are anticipating a start date for this 12-month position in March/April of 2023.

Physical Demand of the Job:

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time in lab or field.
  • Ability to swim (scuba training preferred).
  • Frequent hiking, stooping, crouching, bending and ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to drive van, pull boat trailer, drive Jon-boat, use lawn tractor and power tools.
