What you will be doing: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Northern Regional Office), seeks a qualified professional to manage the NRO Virginia Water Protection Permit (VWP) Program. The successful candidate will be responsible for the team’s consistent implementation of associated laws, regulations, and policies during permitting and compliance activities; hiring, training, and developing new staff and ensuring work is distributed fairly to provide consistent, manageable workloads for staff and to ensure customer service and production expectations are met. The position prepares permits and conducts inspections, as needed, to assure the department meets productivity goals and expectations.

Minimum QualificationsThe successful candidate will possess the following key competencies:Experience/knowledge of Wetland ScienceKnowledge of local, state & federal water quality laws, regulations, policies & programsExperience in Virginia Water Protection Permit ProgramPersonnel Management and Leadership SkillsProject ManagementPublic CommunicationNegotiation SkillsDemonstrated knowledge of DEQ Leadership & Management Competencies
Preferred QualificationsGraduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in environmental engineering, or other physical science discipline or a combination of education, experience, and training may substitute for a degree.
Special RequirementsThe Commonwealth does not provide sponsorship; therefore, applicants must be a citizen or national of the U.S., a Lawful Permanent Resident, or an alien authorized to work.Excluding current DEQ Employees, the Selected Candidate MUST pass a criminal background check.This position requires compliance with the Code of Virginia’s Conflict of Interests Act and must complete training every two years and submit a financial disclosure form upon hire and every year thereafter.
