Position for a Postdoctoral Researcher in ‘water and development research’
We seek highly qualified and motivated individual with enthusiastic attitude towards high-quality interdisciplinary research to work as a Postdoctoral Researcher at our team. The position is for a period of 1+2 years, and should start on January 2017. The position is intended for full-time work, but also part-time arrangement is possible by mutual consent.
Position is part of a larger funding scheme from private foundation Maa- ja vesitekniikan tuki ry, that aims to support the water and development related research in Finland. The multi-disciplinary scheme offers a unique setup for inspiring research and team interaction.
The Postdoctoral Researcher would have active role in instructing doctoral candidates. S/he would also conduct high quality research in one or several of the following themes:
i) Water governance and/or integrated management approaches
ii) Water security related to food and/or energy
iii) Water (and land) scarcity in food production
iv) Transboundary waters
v) Urbanisation and water
vi) Climate change and variability
As part of their research plan/essay, the candidate must clearly state the theme(s) his/her research would focus on and indicate how their work would align with the ongoing research of the group (www.wdrg.fi). Moreover, the candidate should specify how his/her research contributes to the Finnish water profession.
Research environment: The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team of researchers led by Professor Olli Varis, with Assistant Professor Matti Kummu and University Lecturer Marko Keskinen. The team is working with various topics related to global water resources and water and development issues, from basin to global scale.
Qualifications: Applicants must i) have completed (within the past five years) a doctoral degree in a related field, ii) have a strong background in water resources, environmental or other studies relevant to the research themes, iii) show a strong publication record, iv) have experience in instructing/supervising doctoral and master students, and v) have sound knowledge in theme-specific methods. Experience in team building and leadership is an asset. Fluent English is required.
