The Ministry of Forests (the Ministry) is the province’s land manager, responsible for the stewardship of Provincial Crown land, cultural and natural resources. The Ministry is responsible for the flood safety and drought management programs in BC and collaborates with the Provincial Emergency Program to protect public health and safety related to these events. The Ministry plays a leadership role by guiding dike safety and land use management and supports other provincial and local government agencies in emergency management.

Under limited direction, the Flood Authorizations Specialist, as a Deputy Inspector of Dikes appointed under the Dike Maintenance Act, is responsible for statutory duties regulating the construction, inspection and maintenance of dikes and other flood hazard mitigation works within the province. This position will develop, maintain and distribute provincial dike safety records and information, including mapping. The position will also work on coordinating and training flood assessment and observer personnel.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a water-related discipline (Natural Resource Management, Integrated Watershed Management, Physical (fluvial) Geography, Water Resource or Civil Engineering) and a minimum of 3 years’ related experience; OR,
  • Technical diploma in a related field and 5 years’ related experience, OR,
  • Secondary school graduation, supplemented by related courses and 8 years’ related experience.
  • Related experience includes hydrology, hydraulic structures, drainage, soil mechanics, construction/engineering practice, surveying, project supervision, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence, or equivalent.
