U.K. nationals: Technical officer (Hydrology)
The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate.
We need you to help us to regulate and improve the water environment of the Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Area. Your role will be to analyse, interpret and report on hydrology data for Internal and External customers. We analyse and report upon the full range of hydrology from droughts to flood activities. This work will include contributing to the production of the water situation report, carrying out quality assurance of river flow data and technical assessments into the impact of water abstractions on river flows. You’ll work closely with your Hydrology team members and also with internal and external customers and partners.

The Hydrology team support drought and flood management as well as water resources regulation. We provide technical expertise and advice on a range of water resource management projects including Water Framework Directive, Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies, and Restoring Sustainable Abstraction programme and determining water resources permits. This is a dispersed team with team members based in the Bodmin and Exeter offices.
Experience/skills required You’ll have a degree (or equivalent relevant experience) in geography, environmental sciences or similar (or equivalent relevant experience) in a subject related to hydrology. You’ll have a good understanding of hydrology concepts, data and techniques. Alongside this you’ll have experience of the analysis and interpretation of data and information to inform decision making and problem solving. You’ll be expected to be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word along with ArcGIS.
You’ll have a proven track record as a confident communicator and be able to convey information and ideas clearly. You will deliver work to high standards and be able to prioritise and organise tasks to achieve results.
