Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The UNEP Conference services(Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions / Conventions Operations Branch) internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Manager of Information and Conference Services of the Conventions Operations Branch/Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (office), the intern will:

Primarily assist the Conventions Operations Branch, Conference Services, participants’ management for the preparation of the next meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions and high-level segment to be held from 24 April to 5 May 2017, in Geneva, Switzerland. The intern will provide direct support to the participants’ focal point for the preparations of and during these meetings, as follows:
-Support in the preparation and send-out of the invitation letters and supporting documents to meeting participants.
-Receive and screen registration forms transmitted by observers. This involves verification that the body or agency has previously been admitted as an observer, based on the lists provided by the legal officer; proceed with registration of observers in the relevant category (i.e. NGO, IGO, UN organization, etc.); transmit a standard response informing of the procedure to be followed, using template text; provide to the contacts database operator the nomination status and categorization of registrations’ received for proper recording of the information in the database.
-Review the provisional list of observers prepared by the contacts database operator.
-Prepare registration folders for delegates; assist delegates, in particular observers to register at the registration desk during the meetings; check participants’ contact details in the registration folders prepared in advance: sign and correct their contact details, as necessary.
-Assist with the review of credentials before and during the meetings of the COPs; assist in the preparation of the credentials’ tracking documents; keep documents up to date; review status of credentials and statistics during the meetings of the COPs. That includes: list of and total number of parties to each Convention at the time of the opening of the meetings; credentials received organized by party and by Convention; specification as to whether credentials received are originals or copies, etc; support in drafting a report on credentials for the meeting of the COPs to each respective Convention.
-Provide other relevant support, as required.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study:
Second university level program related to information and communication technology or related fields.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
