The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as a Senior Researcher- Gender and Social Inclusion.

The position holder will lead gender and social inclusion-related activities of IWMI’s research for development projects. The position holder will also help in addressing key development challenges with a core focus on the implementation of gender transformative approaches in key development challenges by IWMI’s research projects, build core competency in IWMI-East Africa office on gender transformative approaches, and serve as key expert on gender and social inclusion issues in research project development and implementation.

Duties AND Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, design and lead, as well as contribute, to gender, water and development-focused action research projects.
  • Plan, design and implement scientific methods in assessment of impacts of agricultural water management technologies and practices on livelihoods of women small-scale producers across crop – mixed crop-livestock and pastoral communities in geographies covered by IWMI-EA office research.
  • Work closely with other research staff at IWMI-EA office in all areas of research related to climate smart water management.
  • Following gender transformative approaches, contribute towards identification of agricultural water management technologies and practices that address needs of women and other marginalized social groups.
  • Substantially contribute to the authorship and development of key research products, including but not limited to, research papers and journal articles, blogs and webcasts/podcasts, multimedia presentations and social media.
  • Support stakeholder consultations at multiple scales.
  • Develop an effective and sustainable body of funded work on Gender and Social Inclusion by developing and strengthening strategic proposal development and partnerships.
  • Proactively support IWMI’s efforts in establishing and strengthening partnerships with institutions, including grassroots partners at all levels to explore pathways to influence policy, enhance capacity and establish strong funding consortia, so as to enable IWMI to reach out to new and emerging research for development constituencies
  • Support effective communication of IWMI’s work on sustainable and inclusive growth and development in East Africa
  • Spearhead cutting-edge intersectional gender integration, such as within water resource management, natural resource management, agroecology, migration, climate adaptation and resilience, and disaster risk reduction.
  • Contribute to quality assurance processes in IWMI East Africa office to ensure scientific rigor in IWMI and partner research.
  • Work within multi-disciplinary teams to deliver results; develop new research ideas and proposals
  • Develop relationship with key IWMI partners and identify potential new partners in climate-smart water resources management, modeling of water – energy – food – environment systems in changing climate.
  • Promotes internal and external collaboration across researchers, stakeholders and project partners
  • Prepare journal articles, blogs, policy briefs, research reports and conference papers.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Essential:

  • PhD degree in a social science discipline (e.g., anthropology, development studies, sociology, geography, gender studies) or interdisciplinary with social science focus.

Desirable:

  • Work experience in developing countries and the Nile basin countries, in particular.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Experiences:

  • Knowledge of current and cutting-edge intersectional gender theory and approaches, including gender-transformative approaches.
  • Experience in rural transformation processes, gender transformative approaches, social inclusion and contemporary participatory and feminist political ecology, economy research skills preferably in East Africa, in areas such as water resource development for inclusive economic development and resilience; rural transformation and implications for agriculture, water management
  • Good social analysis skills with thematic understanding relevant to gender issues, inequality, equity, intersectionality, with ability to demonstrate how these issues relate to rural contexts and agricultural populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly and policy thinking on sustainability transformations / transitions an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge of spoken and written English.
  • Capacity to travel is essential for undertaking empirical field research and attending international project meetings
