The Rockefeller Foundation is seeking an experienced Director, Financial Innovation to join the Climate & Resilience team.

The Director will help to lead the development of market changing innovations to increase capital that flows towards the development and implementation of climate and resilience projects globally.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Managing Director (MD) and Climate & Resilience team to serve as a key contributor to the development and execution of the vision and strategy for the Climate & Resilience team, with a specific focus on financial innovation in climate and resilience.
  • Assume a leading role in the continued development and scaling of an investment fund focused on the Middle East, sub Saharan Africa and Europe. Responsibilities will include:
  • Building positive relationships and mutual trust with city actors to ensure that resilience is being delivered.
  • Supporting engagement with cities.
  • Cultivating project pipeline opportunities.
  • Liaising with key stake holders in the fund (e.g., fund manager, investors as appropriate) on a regular basis to ensure key milestones are met (e.g., roll out of the fund, monitoring of impact, etc.).
  • Partnering with MD to participate in and ultimately lead fund related meetings on behalf of The Rockefeller Foundation.
  • Exploring opportunities to identify comparable opportunities in other geographies and increase the uptake of the Resilience Screen among other funding and financial institutions and cities to accelerate investments in urban resilience.
  • Partner with colleagues in the Climate & Resilience team to identify, evaluate and develop opportunities for grant and PRI investment focused in Europe, the Middle East and sub Saharan Africa. Opportunities must be aligned with The Rockefeller Foundation and the Climate & Resilience team’s impact goals and emphasize climate and resilience positive data driven financial mechanisms that can go-to-market and scale quickly.
  • Support the management and monitoring of the Climate & Resilience team’s grant portfolio to ensure that outcomes are achieved.
  • Serve as a source of intelligence and thought leadership around climate and resilience finance to drive innovation, generate new knowledge and engage industry influencers.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop a network of strategic regional and global relationships with key financial market participants, leveraging their knowledge, relationships and resources to multiply the impact of the Foundation’s work.
  • Work effectively to support the development of and contribute to the vision, strategy and overall operations of the Climate & Resilience team.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in relevant discipline a plus.
  • At least 10 years of directly related work experience in the financial sector, including completed transaction experience in project finance and/or blended finance in Europe, the Middle East and/or sub Saharan Africa.
  • Knowledge of and comfort with risk transfer structures is a plus.
  • Strong understanding and vision for resilience infrastructure, with direct experience working in infrastructure project development and working with cities.
  • Thorough understanding of global banking, financial institutions, operating environment, with related industry knowledge and relationships.
  • Strong analytic skills including comfort in building and reviewing financial models, knowledge of capital market structures and ability to create bespoke financial products to address critical market needs that hinder the delivery of environmental and social impact at scale.
  • Knowledgeable in international development; skilled collaborator who can work successfully across boundaries and multiple cultures, with the ability to bring different ideas together.
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic mindset, with demonstrated experience leading work independently from strategy to execution, ensuring accountability for results along the way.
  • Committed to and passionate about sustainability, climate change, urban resilience and social impact.
  • Deep experience in developing and managing relationships with complex, geographically diverse, global organizations of all sizes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage effectively with a wide variety of people and organizations, and across teams, with an ability to inspire trust and to motivate staff and partners.

  • Demonstrated exceptional management and operational experience, including staff development, financial management, and team administration.
  • Committed to using software and data to produce outputs, track outcomes and deliver results, independently and proactively.

  • Fluency in English is required, and fluency with other languages is beneficial.
  • Must be comfortable 20-30% travel domestically and internationally.
