The ANU Fenner School of Environment & Society (FSES) is a world-leading centre for cross-disciplinary environmental and sustainability research, education and policy-relevant advice. A recently awarded ANU Futures Scheme project Using historical weather data for improving future climate risk assessment, aims to establish a new strength in multi-disciplinary climate variability and change research within the FSES.
This project proposes to extend estimates of natural climate variability and extremes using a range of pre-20th century scientific and historical sources to improve climate risk assessment needed for future climate change planning and adaption. Significantly, the project will incorporate an element of ‘citizen science’ data recovery to engage the broader community in the scientific process associated with reconstructing past weather and climate extremes and their observed, real-world impacts. This multi-disciplinary project will incorporate academic expertise from climate scientists, historians and science communicators, alongside industry professionals from the insurance industry and government planning sectors to deliver nationally-significant outcomes.
The Research Assistant employed on the project will provide essential support on a diverse range of research activities including data analysis, recovery of historical weather observations and the preparation of manuscripts for publication. There are opportunities within the role to participate in science communication activities led by the project’s Communications and Citizen Science Officer, professional development activities offered through the ARC Centre for Climate Extremes, and provide teaching support to the climate science program offered within the FSES.
The Australian National University is a world-leading institution and provides a range of lifestyle, financial and non-financial rewards and programs to support staff in maintaining a healthy work/life balance whilst encouraging success in reaching their full career potential.
