Associate Specialist in Water Resources Management and Engineering
The VICELab at UC Merced directed by Dr. Joshua Viers, is looking for a self-motivated and qualified Specialist in Water Resources Management and Engineering. The candidate is expected to use his/her professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions to our lab.
The main goals of this position include developing and implementing integrated watershed modeling approaches aimed at quantifying impacts to hydropower generation and operations, and downstream ecosystems, in response to changing climatic conditions, and collaborating with a team of water resource engineers and watershed scientists to develop climate change adaptation strategies for California. Also to engage in all aspects of study design and execution, including data acquisition; statistical analysis, modeling and interpretation of results; programming and software development; preparation of manuscripts, report, and proposal; and presentation of findings at conferences and outreach events. Other responsibilities extend to the occasional training of students and staff in the scientific method and specific modeling techniques; preparation of proposals for scientific research funding; and communication and engagement with collaborators globally.
Qualifications: Highly self-motivated individuals who have demonstrated the ability to conduct scientific research with strong written and verbal communication skills are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have obtained a Master’s degree in Water Resources Management Engineering or a related field. Experience in water resources modeling (e.g., SWAT, HEC-x, WEAP, VIC, OpenAgua, Pywr) is required. Evidence of experience in programming (e.g., Python, Matlab, R, C#), geospatial analysis, optimization, team science, and stakeholder engagement is also required. A PhD is preferred.
