Closely aligned with the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) areas of work and capacity building needs, the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net) a capacity sharing ‘network of networks’ that promotes dialogue between science, policy and practice for more effective management of biodiversity and ecosystems, contributing to long-term human well-being and sustainable development.

As a signature product of UNDP’s work in biodiversity and ecosystems, BES-Net harnesses its capacity building expertise at country-level, capitalizes on the accumulated knowledge of best practices and challenges in the field, and brings practitioners into the science-policy arena.

BES-Net focuses on thematic and methodological issues such as Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change (EbA), Land Degradation and Restoration, Pollination and Food Production, Indigenous and Local Knowledge and Biodiversity Finance.

BES-Net is supported by face-to-face capacity building activities (the BES-Net “Trialogues”), a matchmaking facility, and a cutting-edge web portal, all components being mutually reinforcing.

Duties and Responsibilities

The purpose of this consultancy is to support the development/refining of the BES-Net Trialogue methodology and support their implementation.

Specific duties and responsibilities;

  • Refine/develop the methodology for the BES-Net Trialogues;
  • Review, enrich and update the global desk study and its analysis report using other global best practices and methodologies;
  • Facilitate the development and framing of standard agendas and methodologies for the different (proposed) formats of the BES-Net Trialogues;
  • Finalize the BES-Net Facilitators Check List and Toolkit;
  • Develop a Trialogue briefing pack for local facilitators and speakers;
  • Support the organization, facilitation and management of the BES- Net Trialogues;
  • Recommend the methodology of evaluating and monitoring the Trialogues and their capacity building impact;
  • Develop a global roaster of Trialogue Facilitators.

  • Ability to guide the design and implementation of capacity development initiatives at different scales;

  • Ability to train speakers and facilitators.

  • Planning and Organizing: Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; Uses time efficiently; Monitor and adjust plans and actions as necessary;
  • Client orientation: Identifies clients’ needs and match them with appropriate solutions; Keeps a client informed on progress and setbacks in projects; Meets timeline for delivery of product or service to client;
  • Creativity: Offers new and different solutions to solve problems or meet clients’ needs; Takes calculated risks on new and unusual ides, thinks outside the box; Takes an interest in new ideas and new ways of doing things;
  • Communication: Ability to write clear reports; Ability to engage with diplomacy with various stakeholders; Proven networking and outreach skills in multi-stakeholder environments.
Required Skills and Experience


  • Master’s degree in environmental or social science, international relations, adult education, coaching, capacity building, policy development or related relevant field;


  • At least 7 years of work experience at the national and international levels in a field related to the conceptualisation, organisation and management of international technical meetings and or dialogues;
  • Proven ability to organize and facilitate national and international-level workshops in various regions of the world;
  • Experience in working in policy development and implementation an advantage;
  • Demonstrated experience in analysing scientific/research and other sources of information;
  • Demonstrated experience in writing concise and relevant reports;
  • Full computer literacy is highly desired.


  • Excellent verbal communication and writing skills in English;
