Are you interested in developing data science skills and using these to improve our understanding of the environment?

We are seeking a numerically literate graduate with an interest in data, computing and other technology to work with us as an environmental data scientist. You will work on a range of water resources science projects addressing environmental issues in the UK and overseas, and gain a broad range of skills in data management and analysis for environmental science.

The successful applicant will undertake project work to help develop systems for producing environmental information from sensors measuring in the field and existing monitoring data. Such work underpins CEH’s water resources science and, by making data available over the web to a range of end users, supports the UK and global science community. The main focus will initially be on the development of sensor data structures within our new ENTRAIN project, which will include the COSMOS-UK soil moisture monitoring network, Greenhouse Gas Network and the Thames Initiative water quality platform, and linking sensor data to spatial information such as a digital river network to enable automated analysis of data across river catchments. The post will be a Research Associate in environmental data science based at CEH's Wallingford site, working within the Water Resources Systems Group.

The post holder will apply their skills in programming, analysis, and hydrological science in setting up and managing systems for handling data, creating time series and spatial datasets, delivering environment metadata over the web and assisting scientists in a wide range of disciplines to analyse the data.

Skills and qualifications required

  • Degree level qualified, ideally within a scientific subject with some element/modules of computing, including programming
  • Demonstrable programming skills, ideally in Python though good experience in another language would be acceptable
  • Experience of the use and management of environmental, or other, data
  • Interest in informatics and its use within environmental sciences
  • Some knowledge of and interest in hydrological science
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to promote and adhere to CEH values of Excellence, Integrity and Team work. Information on CEH’s values is available here.
