ICF is seeking a Climate Resilience Specialist to support our broad portfolio of work on climate adaptation and resilience. This work falls across all levels of government and with commercial clients, enhancing the resilience of energy, transportation, and water systems, other critical infrastructure, and the vital societal and natural elements that make our communities whole. Our world-class analyses are based in rigorous science, clearly communicated to enable proactive planning and implementation of resilience solutions.

The consultant chosen for this position will provide technical expertise related to the analysis and interpretation of weather and climate datasets and support multi-disciplinary teams of experts on multiple short- and long-term projects primarily within the climate adaptation and resilience practice. The preferred locations are Cambridge, MA, Salt Lake City, UT, or Arlington, VA.

What you’ll be doing…

  • Provide technical support for multi-disciplinary teams focused on applied climate risk and resilience projects
  • Conduct quantitative analyses and extract actionable insights using large, multidimensional climate and weather datasets
  • Conduct geospatial analyses using GIS and similar software
  • Prepare presentations, reports, data visualizations, and other high-quality communication materials
  • Complete tasks in fast-paced and self-motivated environment in a timely and efficient manner

What you’ll need to have…

  • Master’s degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, geosciences, Earth science, or similar, with a focus on physical climate science. Master’s in engineering or other disciplines must demonstrate significant experience with climate and meteorological datasets.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrable skills in one or more programming languages (preference for R, but also Python, MATLAB, etc.) to process large environmental datasets, including netCDF files, time series, and geoTIFFs
  • Experience developing and implementing research projects examining real-world data, preferably using meteorological, climatological, or environmental datasets
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate complex climate information to non-scientists to inform decision making
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Organized, detail oriented, and the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel)

 Our Preferred Skills/Experience…

  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate, analyze, interpret, and appropriately apply climate model output and meteorological observations for climate impact and risk analyses
  • Experience working with multiple climate downscaling methodologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CMIP5/CMIP6 models and commonly used climate change and greenhouse gas scenarios (e.g., RCPs, SSPs)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with GIS software and conduct geospatial analyses
  • Familiarity with climate risk and resilience topics, including climate change impacts and resilience solutions for the energy sector and utilities
