Position Summary

Performs instrumental analysis on water samples using at least two types of instrumentation.  Manage workflow and reporting by utilizing systems currently in place.  This is a term position with potential for renewal based on performance.

Overview  

Participate in the design, execution, and control of laboratory research studies.  To conduct experimental tests and procedures in a research laboratory; including dependently setting up and operating laboratory equipment, summarize, report, and interpret research data.  Development or revise existing methodologies as needed.  Duties will also include assisting other research staff and students in operating laboratory equipment.

Details

Position will require some administrative duties in the form of managing laboratory workflow utilizing existing systems currently in place in the Soil Water Environmental Lab (SWEL), development and or refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for existing and new methodologies, including quality control for laboratory procedures, supervision/instruction of students and staff.  In addition, this position will be responsible for operating water analysis instrumentation to include ion chromatographs, nutrient analyzer, dissolved carbon, and isotope instrumentation.  This includes basic maintenance and calibration procedures, coordination of experimental tests, participation in staff and faculty updates/progress reports.  Implementation of data reporting system that includes sample codes (ID’s) and database maintenance.  Be able to quickly query data and provide summary statistics for quality control and proposals for new funding. 

Supervision

Supervision will be necessary when assisting graduate students or other staff members in operation of instrumentation listed above.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in field related to soil science, water science, and/or chemistry OR equivalent combination of education/experience.  Basic experience with analytical instrumentation and quality control procedures, including preparation of calibration standards and curves.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience utilizing SEAL nutrient and Picarro isotope analyzers.  Experience with R statistical and reporting software is also desirable.
