POSITION DESCRIPTION
Assistant Professor–Race, Environmental Justice, and Earth System Science–Department of Geography
The Department of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Race, Environmental Justice, and Earth System Science at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall semester 2023. The start date would be July 1, 2023.
The Department of Geography has a longstanding commitment to understanding Earth system processes and applying tools from those disciplines to understand and highlight the impacts of human activities on climate, ecosystems, and other aspects of the biophysical environment. It is increasingly critical that we understand the consequences of those impacts on vulnerable and racially marginalized groups as well as the frameworks of these groups in understanding the ongoing transformation of our planet. As an established leader in the field of race and justice scholarship in Geography, the Department seeks a scholar whose work would catalyze our investments across these areas.
The ideal candidate’s research, teaching, and service profile should demonstrate expertise in environmental racism and justice and investment in the lived conditions of marginalized and racialized populations within the context of Earth system processes, physical geography, or environmental geography. The selected candidate is expected to contribute to the Department’s continuing commitment to and leadership in the field of Black Geographies.
The area of research specialization is open but should complement our Department’s interdisciplinary and global approach and our Earth System Science faculty’s expertise in biogeochemistry, biogeography, climate dynamics and climate change, geomorphology, glaciology, hydrology, and terrestrial ecology. Accordingly, candidates are welcome to apply with expertise in climate change, water resources and water equity, climate justice, land-use processes, pollution, and/or environmental justice from a range of social science disciplines and interdisciplinary fields including, but not limited to, geography, geospatial analysis, environmental studies/science, public policy, Earth and atmospheric sciences, and ethnic studies.
The Department of Geography recognizes the intrinsic relationship between diversity and excellence in all our endeavors. We embrace open and equitable access to opportunities for learning and development as our obligation and goal. The Department is home to the Berkeley Black Geographies project, which has produced significant increases in student and curricular diversification and representation. Also, the Department has initiated an Antiracist Working Group to create a more inclusive environment and experience for our URM graduate students and to make our graduate program more intellectually inclusive. In support of these endeavors, we seek candidates who are committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through their research, teaching, and/or service.
The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
