Environmental Science and Management (ESM) is the study of the interactions between society and the physical, chemical, ecological and biological processes that structure and maintain ecosystems. Our work is critical to understanding and developing sustainable ecosystems, human societies and economies.

ESM offers undergraduate degrees in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies, three Master’s degrees, and a joint PhD in Earth, Environment, and Society through the School of the Environment.

Position Summary

The Department of Environmental Science and Management (ESM) at Portland State University (PSU) invites applicants for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Management position with specialization in social science aspects of environmental management, starting Fall 2017. We are seeking a social scientist who uses empirical methods to conduct environmental justice research related to urban ecosystems, climate change, indigenous studies, air quality and/or environmental restoration and who can conduct research in coupled human-natural systems.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a PhD degree in the social sciences, natural resource management, environmental science, or related field, as well as experience teaching at the undergraduate level. They will also have a strong record of research scholarship, publication, and grant support, be able to maintain a grant-funded research program, and contribute to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

This position is funded through PSU’s University Studies general education program and the teaching responsibilities include a year-long interdisciplinary Freshmen Inquiry class, one section of a Sophomore Inquiry course and one ESM departmental course. The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively across disciplines within the School of the Environment, comprised of Geology, Geography, Environmental Science & Management, and Systems Science.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD degree in the social sciences, natural resource management, environmental science, or related field.

Experience with undergraduate teaching.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be dependent upon qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.

Annual Salary69,000 – 71,000
