The CMCC Foundation is a scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, the society, the world of business and policy makers.

Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

Our Division of Ocean Prediction and Application (OPA) is looking for a talented, motivated and proactive Ocean Modeller to support the research and the ocean modeling activities.

The primary purpose for this position is to take on a pivotal role within the integrated climate modelling team in implementing, developing and testing numerical models, designing and executing experiments for coupled modelling systems (atmosphere, hydrology, waves and circulation), also improving the parameterization of air-sea and land-sea fluxes. The activities will be focused both on research developments and on transition to the operational forecasting activities of the OPA division. The duties will also include processing and interpreting simulation-based and observational data sets.

This position is for a Numerical Modeller (i.e., Post Doc, Junior Scientist, or Scientist for research career at CMCC) with strong knowledge of ocean and coastal processes and modelling, and programming skills. A gained experience with the use of couplers for the Earth System modeling components will be considered an asset.

The position is under the sponsorship of the projects: Adriaclim (IT-HR interreg strategic project); Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea Monitoring and Forecasting Centres; “Fish RISE – Remote, Intelligent & Sustainable aquaculturE system for Fish”.

It is desired to hold following qualifications:

  • PhD in Physical Oceanography, Coastal Engineering and the other scientific disciplines dealing with numerical modelling e.g physics, mathematics, environmental science;
  • experience in numerical modeling development;
  • good knowledge and skills in programming language (i.e Python and Fortran);
  • knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and script languages (i.e. *nix shell);
  • knowledge of parallel programming on HPC architectures;
  • fluency in English.

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

Some fiscal benefit could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researches/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).

We offer the opportunity to join our team through a temporary contract of 24 months starting from October 2022, with the possibility of contract extension based on performance, results achieved and new project opportunities.

Annual salary ranging from 28 to 42 k€ for Post Doc position and 33-56 k€ for Junior Scientist and 40-60K€ for Scientist, comprehensive of benefits, depending on qualification and experience.
