Summary: Wastewater Alternatives & Innovations (WAI) is seeking a Project Associate to start work immediately. This person will work remotely and be a highly organized, experienced project associate with a track record of successfully delivering results in a timely way. WAI is an innovative new nonprofit dedicated to solving wastewater issues in Hawaii caused by the 88,000 unimproved cesspools throughout the state. The organization is growing and looking for a team member who is hardworking, creative, dedicated to protecting the environment and committed to positive change and professional growth. The Project Associate will work directly with the WAI team members to help manage projects, including grant reports and deliverables, workforce development programs, public outreach, special events and meetings. There is ample room for professional development and growth, as well as opportunities to work on federal and state grants, large-scale projects and exciting research.

Job Details: This is a full-time, salaried position with a starting salary between $45,000 and $55,000 per year. There are paid benefits, including vacation days and reimbursement for health insurance premiums as well as access to a retirement saving plan.

Job Description: The Project Associate will work closely with the management team on the coordination and completion of projects to ensure they are on time, within budget and within scope. He/she/they will:

  • Manage various aspects of programs and projects in close partnership with the Directors.(20%)
  • Attend Zoom and in-person meetings, take notes and help follow up on action items. (20%)
  • Support the Managing Director on a new grant focused on workforce development. (20%)
  • Work on grant deliverables and project deadlines to ensure that all requirements are met.(10%)
  • Prepare reports for WAI management, the board & key partners regarding status of various projects, contracts and conferences. (5%)
  • Help set up pilot projects and manage changes to the project scope and schedule. (10%)
  • Help maintain relationships with vendors and contractors. (5%)
  • Create and maintain required project documentation and funding reports. (5%)
  • Engage with social media and the website. (5%)

Project Associate Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred with experience in engineering, education, environmental studies, geology/hydrology or related subject matter.
  • Two to three years of experience in project management work; knowledge and experience in water or wastewater-related work preferred.
  • Good verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work remotely, both independently and as part of a close team.
  • Experience using Mac’s, PC’s and project management programs for a variety of tasks.
  • Competency in Microsoft (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), G-Suite, Zoom, Slack, etc.
  • Very organized, detail-oriented and open to innovative problem-solving.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues on tight deadlines.
  • Experience with database management, ArcGIS mapping preferred.
